What are you guys focused on right now?

I caught up with an ex-case-competition-teammate (eight syllables) recently, expecting to talk about meaning at work, financial goals, and general career advice. Instead, he said something along the lines of my whole life revolves around women, which really got me confuzzled (confused & puzzled) because I couldn’t emphasize with his priorities. At one point he was evaluating switching jobs as a way to meet more girls. Clearly he’s not spending his weekends writing a F&F newsletter — I’m sure he would look at me crazy right back.

Latest Happenings

• Rooftop Bars: Friend of a friend took us to a rooftop bar in Williamsburg called Water Tower — when I tell you my jaw dropped I’m not kidding. The “vibes” category on Maps don’t do it justice. No cover, either.

• Giving: One thing I’ve noticed in NYC more than any other city by far is that people stop for panhandlers. People trade dollars for “God bless yous.” As first-gen immigrants, sometimes we’re not the most giving. We should change that.

• Home sweet home: Visited Vancouver for a weekend on company dime after a work week in LA. Filled every minute with sunsets, good food, and my people. Highly recommend the foie gras profiteroles here. 

• Break Neck / 420: It was an unlucky coincidence that Breakneck Ridge (NYC’s most famous hike)'s last day of operation and 4/20 celebrations at Washington Square Park coincided on the same day. Many would have chosen one or the other. But if you know me you know I wouldn’t miss either of those events for the world. I commuted two hours to Cold Springs, speed ran the hike, and made it just in time for 4:20pm. Truly a day to remember.

• Why are Young People Everywhere So Unhappy? Short read on what we should already know. Details an interesting statistic that as countries get richer, less people report feeling a sense of purpose and meaning with work.

• The Epic Rise and Fall of a Dark-Web Psychedelic Kingpin: Absolute thriller read (~20 minutes) that touches on entrepreneurship, risk-taking, and incredible good fortune. I wouldn’t trade my life for his, but I’d argue he’s had one of the most interesting lives ever.

• How to Do Great Work: If you haven’t read this already, why haven’t you?

• My Go-To Travel Tips: Short video summarizing some killer travel tips — wish I had known these sooner.

Hou’s Hacks

• Too Good to Go: App with cheap “leftover” food from bakeries and restaurants. I haven’t used this personally but have heard that there are always really good deals.
